About Caitlin
Caitlin Gentleman is a specialist criminal defence barrister practising from Spring Street Chambers in Tauranga, of which she is a founding member. She conducts court proceedings throughout the wider Bay of Plenty region, appearing regularly in the Tauranga, Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki District Courts. Caitlin also regularly appears in the Hamilton and Rotorua High Courts.
Caitlin began her legal career in a general practice firm before specialising in criminal defence. Her experience ranges from minor offences right through to serious crime, including sexual offences, serious drug offences and murder. As a barrister sole, she takes on a limited caseload to ensure every client receives her full focus and attention.
Caitlin holds legal aid PAL4 status, meaning she is able to represent clients on legal aid for all levels of crime in New Zealand. She is also available to accept private instructions.

Caitlin represented N.T. in a high-profile multi-defendant trial in the High Court at Rotorua and Hamilton. The case involved the fatal gang "hotbox" beating of fellow Tribesmen member Mark Hohua. N.T. was found not guilty of murder and guilty of manslaughter. At sentencing, Caitlin argued for a lower start point and secured credits for her client's youth, clean prior record, and background factors — resulting in a sentence of four years and six months.
